Burger King Twitter account hacked

21:05, Feb 18 2013

Burger King's Twitter feed has fallen victim to hackers who changed its branding to that of rival fast food chain McDonald's on the social networking site.

No-one has admitted being behind the stunt, but hacking collective Anonymous appeared to have tweeted about the incident extensively.

The Burger King account was suspended, but a screengrab posted by @AnonymousPress showed the @BurgerKing's Twitter page where it was written: "Burger King USA official Twitter account. Just got sold to McDonalds because the whopper flopped."

Posts from the Burger King account earlier also contained racial slurs, references to drug use and obscenities.

A tweet posted on the @YourAnonNews account read: "We're guessing the @BurgerKing social media team is having a bad day..."

A spokesman for Burger King said: "It has come to our attention that the Twitter account of BURGER KING has been hacked.

"We have worked directly with administrators to suspend the account until we are able to re-establish our legitimate site and authentic postings.

"We apologise to our followers who have been receiving erroneous tweets about other members of our industry and additional inappropriate topics."
