Deputy PM holds radio phone-in

05:05, Jan 10 2013

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will hold the first of his new weekly radio phone-ins later as he seeks to reconnect with voters.

The Liberal Democrat leader is to take calls from listeners to London's LBC 97.3 radio with presenter Nick Ferrari.

"I'm doing this because I don't think politicians get to hear enough from people directly," Mr Clegg said this week.

"You can't do the right thing in government unless you keep in touch with how people are thinking and feeling."

His first phone-in comes in the week of the Government's Mid-Term Review, which was seen as an attempt to relaunch the coalition at the halfway point in its planned five-year term.

But the initiative was plunged into chaos after it emerged an audit of the coalition's record in power had not been published.

It only came to light when one of the Prime Minister's aides was spotted carrying a document which appeared to suggest publication had been delayed to avoid unfavourable coverage.

When it was finally published on Wednesday, Labour called it a "cover-up" that tried to "gloss over David Cameron's broken promises".

The Institute for Government think-tank said the document lacked credibility because of the absence of independent scrutiny.

LBC 97.3 broadcasts in Greater London but is available online across the UK.
