Oscar nominations to be announced

05:05, Jan 10 2013

All-conquering Adele will find out if she has a chance of adding an Oscar to her armful of awards when the nominations for Hollywood's big night are announced later.

This year's host Seth MacFarlane and Spider-Man star Emma Stone will reveal who is in the running for the coveted awards at an event at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.

Adele, whose 21 album has been a massive hit in America, is expected to get a nod in the original song category for her Bond theme Skyfall.

Most of the attention will be focused on the big awards with familiar names including Daniel Day-Lewis, Dame Judi Dench and Dame Helen Mirren carrying British hopes.

Day-Lewis will be expected to follow Wednesday's Bafta nomination with an Oscar nod for his performance in Steven Spielberg's political biopic Lincoln.

The film, set in the latter years of the American Civil War, is one of several blockbusters expected to do well along with the big screen version of Les Miserables, Ben Affleck's thriller Argo, Quentin Tarantino's western Django Unchained and comedy Silver Linings Playbook.

Les Miserables director Tom Hooper, who won an Oscar in 2010 when his film The King's Speech dominated the awards, said he had his "fingers crossed" for the film whose stars Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman could both be recognised.

He said: "I'll get up with the rest of Hollywood to watch the announcement."

Dame Judi and her Bond co-star Javier Bardem are both outside tips for nomination with success perhaps more likely for Dame Helen whose role in Hitchcock as the wife of the acclaimed film-maker has won plaudits from the critics.

Other names likely to feature are US stars Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field, who both appear in Lincoln, and Jessica Chastain who plays a CIA officer involved in the hunt for Osama bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirty. This year's ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on Sunday February 24.
