Two found dead in swollen river

10:05, Sep 27 2012

The bodies of two people have been found in a swollen river, police said.

A member of the public spotted a woman's body on a sandbank in the River Clywedog, near Wrexham, North Wales, shortly after 5pm on Wednesday.

It is understood the woman was a 27-year-old from the local area.

As a result of police searches connected to the discovery, a second body, thought to be a man, was found in the river in the early hours.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: "Inquiries are ongoing. It is believed to be linked to the discovery of a woman's body yesterday evening. This has yet to be confirmed."

The River Clywedog was swollen on Wednesday following heavy rain and North Wales Fire Service's water recovery team had been assisting the search.

Police say they are treating the deaths as unexplained and have appealed for witnesses.

A fire service spokeswoman described the river as "fast flowing" on Wednesday and warned people to be careful when approaching waterways following extreme weather.

She said: "Rivers may appear safe but fast flowing currents are dangerous."
