Friary tennis club’s men’s team is top of the premier league going into the second half of the season. The A team has played seven of the season’s 12 matches, winning five, drawing one and losing one. They have 20 points out of a possible 28. Julian Fisher, team captain, said: “It’s been an excellent start to the season. We have shown we can compete at this higher level but most satisfying is that we have used every member of the squad, with some of the team playing together in a match situation, for the first time. “This is very pleasing as we have trained hard during the winter, practising with potential new partnerships and it shows we now have the depth of players, something we have always been short of, to compete during the long summer season. “The important thing now is to maintain this level. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves as we have played more matches than anyone else and we don’t have an ideal fixture list with the remaining five matches stretched across four months. “Fortunately we have other leagues and tournaments to compete in which will help us stay match fit.” For information about the club, call Bill Drakeley, chairman, on 01827 312 140. |
