Williams named Team GB ambassador

00:45, Feb 7 2013

Olympic gold medallist Amy Williams has vowed to inspire the next generation of Great British winter stars after being announced as the first official Team GB 2014 Ambassador by the British Olympic Association.

The announcement of Williams' role comes exactly one year prior to the start of the Sochi Winter Games, which could yield Great Britain's best Winter Olympic medal haul in over half a century.

Williams, who clinched skeleton gold in Vancouver, said: "Never in a million years did I anticipate the intense spotlight that winning gold at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics would cast on me."

She added: "I hope, through my role as Ambassador, I can only only help Team GB members in Sochi achieve their Olympic ambitions but also, and very importantly, enjoy the most special moment of their life by becoming an Olympian of Olympic medallist."

Williams was Great Britain's only medallist in Vancouver, and not since 1936 has the nation managed to claim three or more medals at a single Winter Games, but current rankings suggest 2014 could be different.

Slopestyle star James Woods and short-track skater Elise Christie are both ranked number one in the world, Shelley Rudman won this year's world skeleton title and Tom Brewster's men's curlers are currently at two in the world.

BOA chief executive and Team GB Chef de Mission for Sochi, Andy Hunt, believes the inspiration of Williams' rise to Olympic stardom will help spur the team on towards more success.

Hunt said: "As our first official Team GB 2014 Ambassador, Amy Williams will be an integral part of Team GB and play an invaluable role in Sochi, where she will be at the heart of the action."
